Composed in 2019 for harpist Anita Jaynes and the Nebraska Brass, Excursion was commissioned through a generous grant from the American Harp Association.
Written in a lively, scherzando style, this piece explores the interplay of sounds using a combination not often encountered: that of brass quintet and concert harp. Throughout the process of writing, the composer worked extensively with the harpist in order to maximize the playability of the part, as well as keeping dynamic balance with the stronger sonorities of the brass instruments. In the process, the composer learned a great deal about the harp’s idioms and idiosyncrasies.
