Chiquilín de Bachín is a song composed by Astor Piazzolla set to lyrics written by his friend and colleague, the Uruguayan-Argentine poet, Horacio Ferrer. The song is based on a chiquilín (‘little boy’) Piazzolla and Ferrer knew in real life; a poor 11-year-old named Pablo who spends his nights alone on the streets of Buenos Aires selling flowers to patrons of the theater district’s restaurants and cafés, including one by the name of Bachín.

Piazzolla, though famous for his tangos, sets Chiquilín de Bachín to a waltz. Simple and sad phrases that end in plaintive, yearning cadences depict childlike tenderness, while dark and chromatic harmonies evoke the performer’s lament for the young child’s loss of innocence, and express guilt over such hopeless social injustice.

Michael Maganuco is a freelance solo and orchestral harpist and teacher based in Chicago, Illinois. He has also arranged extensively for the harp. Commissioned by Ann Hobson Pilot, principal harpist emeritus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Maganuco arranged a collection of Astor Piazzolla’s music for violin and harp, which Pilot recorded with violinist, Lucia Lin, for an all-Piazzolla album, Escualo, released in 2015 by Harmonia Mundi. Maganuco is also an award-winning composer, best known for his original solo harp composition, Awakening Stillnesses, grand prize recipient of the Composition Contest for the 8th USA International Harp Competition. The piece was recorded by French harpist, Agnès Clément, on her debut solo album, Dance, released in 2012 by Lyon & Healy Records. Maganuco graduated summa cum laude from Boston University with Bachelor’s degrees in harp performance and composition, and earned his Master’s degree in harp performance from Northwestern University.
