Other Methods & Studies

“STEP BY STEP is a beginning harp book for young children who do not yet know how to read music. Middle C is used as a beginning point, teaching notes in either direction. By the end of the book, the student should be able to read from the Fifth Octave C through to the Third Octave C and should be able to play both hands at the same time even though each hand uses single notes.
Fingerings have purposely been omitted. However, it is my feeling that only the second fingers of each hand should be used since the student will be very involved in note reading, rhythm, etc. It is expected that each teacher will give the students supplementary drills emphasizing hand position, articulation and simple placings. If this is done the students will then be able, upon completion of this book, to proceed to most simple harp books or pieces now available.
I have tried to incorporate beginning theory by inserting a number of workpaper-type exercises and urge you to augment these with some of your own…” S. Balderston
