John Downland was an English composer, lutenist and singer who lived from 1563 to 1626. He wrote this very beautiful, though melancholy, lute piece, which I have transcribed for pedal harp, adding the pedal changes and suggesting fingerings and muffling to avoid unwanted noises. (Dowland chose the same melody for his song “Flow, My Tears”.) It should be played with a singing quality to the melodic line, taking care to delineate the separate voices. Dr. Ken Lee commissioned me to make this transcription. He plays several instruments, including the harp. Since his youth, he has always loved this lute piece after hearing it performed by Julian Bream.
