“The song, Eili, Eili, is known by Jews around the world. This traditional Jewish melody of Eastern Europe shows some influences of synagogal chant. The harmonization used in this arrangement for the harp maintains a flavor of pathos and supplication as the opening melody changes to a freer and more rhapsodic utterance. The lament, based on a largely modified Psalm verse, cries out to God for deliverance from perils and culminates in the profession of the ethos of Judaism. The strong concluding bars of music proclaim Israel’s affirmation of faith.” E. Schuman
