Nancy O’Brien is a professional harpist who began her career as an organist who later switched to harp, an instrument where she found she particularly enjoyed engaging in music with others in orchestra and ensemble work. Chamber work is particularly inviting to her as she enjoys the possibilities of developing and expressing one’s own voice in the interactions between a smaller group of instruments. She has worked in a number of chamber groups over the years and many of her arrangements were developed for her groups. As a board certified music therapist it is probably just in her nature to enjoy these interactions.
In choosing repertoire for arrangement she has always been primarily drawn to music striding the boundaries of folk and classical. Classical music with an ethnic edge to it or ethnic tunes arranged for a classical trio of instruments. With the classical adaptations, she suggests playing them with a rough rather than highly polished classical interpretation.
