“One of the most brilliant stars in Western Civilization’s galaxy was Franz Schubert, born at the end of the 18^th century and already gone when the 19^th had scarcely begun.  The astounding output of music left in the wake of his brief 32 years overwhelms the mind: in excess of 600 lieder, seven completed symphonies, numerous chamber works, operas, sacred music and many other incidental works.  Such mastery at such an early age is almost never seen…It is perhaps his lieder that provide the easiest approach to appreciating his fragile and transcendent art…Whenever possible, I have left Schubert’s voicing untouched.  On occasion, when the pianistic nature of the layout would sabotage the harpist’s equanimity, I have searched for a harpistic solution which will duplicate the sound of the original as closely as the situation allows…I can only suggest that you search about for your most lyric vocal friend and mine the glories of these exquisite gems together.  The open-ended magnetism of the infinite awaits.” Daniel Burton
