“Each of the three movements of Concertino Antico uses and ingredient stemming from music of the Antique world, be it in scale structure or in actual thematic germ. The first movement, “Ceremony,” uses a scale pattern known in Hindu terminology as Bilaval rag. A raga is the modal structure rather than the actual scale, and emphasizes the intervals between certain tones rather than the tones themselves…The second movement, “Ritual” uses only the melodic aspect of the harp and can therefore adhere strictly to its mode, in this case the ancient mode of the Egyptian temple harp…The final section, “Roundelay,” is a tune collected from a West African Marimbist and is suspect of having come there from France at a much earlier epoch…” Estate of Peggy Glanville-Hicks
